The crack between two hipster neighborhoods, home to the now superfunded Canal, the flash point for the new 'Buy Local' and textile revolutions, & filled with brilliant bohemians. . . this is Gowanus & it’ll awesome your face off.

colorful, liquid, brilliance – Paint Works

Art shows at the Gowanus Ballroom are always ambitious. It’s just such a massive space to fill—over 16,000 square feet, with 50-foot ceilings. Plus, in addition to the dozens of visual artists whose work is on display, the shows are always accompanied by a slew of live performances: music, dance, acrobatics, and more. Each time I’ve been, they’ve pull it off fantastically—although the curators always tell me they haven’t slept in over a week.

The current show, which opened last weekend and is closing this weekend, is called Paint Works, and was curated by Kristin Künc and Courtney Jordan, with help from Hyeseung Marriage-Song. The show features work from twenty-four emerging and established artists with ties to Brooklyn, displaying an impressive range of what can be done with paint and canvas. According to the curators:

Featured artists have expanded the traditional building blocks of painting and evolved them in varied and relevant directions—essentially taking the practice and pushing it in places it hasn’t gone before. The paintings explore dreamy, symbolic spaces; the body politic and self-reflection; and subversive carnal fantasies. Personal narratives are represented as well as more traditional themes relating to classical ideals.”

The work was all impressive, with my personal favorite pieces from Alexandra Pacula, Robyn Frank, Alyssa Monks, and daniel Baltzer. We were also treated to a secret performance by aerialist Seanna Sharpe, who hasn’t performed since her stunt on the Williamsburg Bridge in July.

The show is one for one more weekend, so you still have a chance to see some amazing art in a fantastic space. Performances for the closing weekend will include fire dancers Flambeaux Fire and Lady C, burlesque dancer Veronica Varlow, more by Seanna Sharpe, and music from Pendulum Swings, Jenny Luna, Sullied Accolades, and more. Check the Ballroom’s Facebook page for late editions to the performance schedule, or just head over and be dazzled. The show is free both days from 6 to 8, and only $5 after. That’s a literally insane amount of art and entertainment for less than the cost of a beer.
