Gowanus Your Face Off
Gowanus, Brooklyn
The crack between two hipster neighborhoods, home to the now superfunded Canal, the flash point for the new 'Buy Local' and textile revolutions, & filled with brilliant bohemians. . . this is Gowanus & it’ll awesome your face off.

Nestled in the heart of the industrial business zone in Gowanus, Brooklyn, on the corner of 3rd Avenue and 6th Street, lives Halyards. Echoing the prohibition speakeasy establishments that were once hidden nearby, the decor is classy with a slight hint of mystery. It has a large antique glossy wooden bar with dark wooden floors to match. In the main room you can pull up a seat next to the bar or grab a place at the three long tall tables made from thick wood and metal piping. Just past the bar is a wall that slightly obscures the brand-new pool table and more intimate seating. In this area one can shoot a few games or have a private conversation with a classy date. Also in this area there is a hallway that feels like it leads to back rooms where mobsters are gambling or where bottles of prohibition moonshine are being made. (We checked. This hallways actually lead to the restrooms. Dang it!) Halyard’s unique environment allows for friendly conversation and after work shenanigans.

The old-fashioned look of the place is bolstered by how the bottles are displayed on the back-bar. Normally bottles are right next to each other blurring the names of the different brands together. But here, like in bars in the early twentieth century, bottles are spread a part, allowing one to easily review brand labels and check-out the various bottle designs. This helps when making a drink choice from the cocktail menu, although the bartender will gladly assist you with this endeavor. Halyards has whisky, but it is not necessarily a “whisky bar” as repeatedly reported by other publications. Halyards is a quality cocktail bar with a classy ‘European local’ feel. It’s menu includes 12-year-old single Malt Scotch, triple distilled Irish Whisky, various red & white wines, and other premium beverages. For mixed drinks you can find a classic or new cocktail that is reasonably priced, but still elegant.

GYFO stopped by and tried a few from the menu:

Old Fashioned: Bourbon & Simple Syrup, Muddle Orange, a Cherry & Fresh Lemon Juice.
This is a true classic! and that’s just how we like it.

Dark and Stormy: Goslings Black Seal Rum & Ginger Beer with a Lemon & Candied Ginger.
Light, refreshing summery cocktail. Not too strong or heavy. Good Ginger beer. Stormy!

Classic Gin Martini: Beefeater Gin & a Lemon Twister.
A pretty standard Gin Martini, but with the price, hard to beat!

Root and Ginger Beer: Root Liquor with a distinctive Memory of Root Beer and Ginger Beer.
This drink comes with Root Liquor which is a limited quantity hand-made beverage. This makes the drink extra special for the taste buds and with the added Ginger Beer it’s just truly amazing!

There are two TV’s that flank the bar, but we are not sure what plays on them; we assume sports like rugby, football, and maybe cricket. We have a good feeling that this will be the place to watch the World Cup when it starts up again.

Don’t be mislead into thinking that Halyard’s is just some type of Fancy Pants Cocktail place or European sports bar, Halyards is all about art! The pub has had after parties for local galleries and on Tuesdays has Art Night with artist Jonathan Fritz. On Art Night for 15 bucks you can get a drink and a small canvas. This is a must attend event, getting a chance to artistically express yourself and sip cocktails is freaking brilliant! In addition to Tuesday’s Art Night, Halyards has other events that include a trivia night and variety of small music shows featuring rock, folk, and jazz bands. Check out their facebook page to see what’s coming up next.

Halyard’s is a great place to just relax and hang out. It’s atmosphere and friendly staff makes it something unique in the blossoming industrial neighborhood of Gowanus. Stop by early or late and grab a drink!
