So Many Books and So Little Time

Slicing the Public

Each year, city-funded institutions wage petition and letter writing campaigns to try to prevent the now ever growing budget cuts from being passed down through Albany and City Hall. It’s getting to the point, that we can’t remember if we signed the petition or not (did we do it this year? We swear we signed something recently, but maybe that was LAST June?) Here’s a list of Cultural Institutions affected by these cuts: City-Owned Institutions – Links to Cultural Institutions. –not to mention the cuts to Education, Fire Departments, Summer Youth Programs, Public Parks.

So Many Books and So Little Time

Right now the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) has a photo exhibit that puts faces to some of the people affected by these budget cuts. One World, Many Stories: Where do the books go? by Joey O’Loughlin are tucked away in the elevator vestibule on the far right of the Central Branch’s main lobby. The photos on display are of people who use the services of the BPL in one way or another. The pictures are accompanied by a slide show of additional portraits with audio interview clips. There is a modern style rocking chair in the space if you feel like lingering for a bit and to be honest it’s a great place to escape to when the summer heat gets to be too much.

The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) consists of 58 branch locations, within a half mile of every Brooklyn resident (and a handful of Bookmobiles, a Kidsmobile and the Bibliobus that augment their services in harder to reach communities).

The exhibit runs through August 22nd check out the slide show above.
