For anyone who aspires to someday show at PS1 or the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall – or even just to visit – we are offering a one day lecture on the history and ideas of installation art.
Through discussion and images, students will gain insight into the ideas and techniques involved in installation work, as well as become familiar with some of the major figures in the genre. More importantly, students will be inspired and challenged to consider other platforms for their work, to consider the consequences and advantages of combining mediums, and to think in terms of creating inhabitable atmospheres within their art.
Artists we will consider include: Rafael Lozano-Hemme, Christian Marclay, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Michel Gondry, Candice Breitz, Alvin Lucier, Tehching Hsieh, Charlie Todd, Shepard Fairey, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Kettle’s Yard House, Graziano Cecchini, Olafur Eliasson, Marina Abramović, Janet Cardiff, and Aleksandra Mir.
